Yes quite right Ken. I usually adopt the move 4.Bb5+ followed by an exchange and then c3 which usually nullifies the threat on d4 for a while. In the game for some reason that all went to pot and I thought of trying a new variation out. Never recovered after the exchange and indeed there were other and possibly better options for black concerning d4 without exchanging queens. I'm still up for trying new things but not this particular new thing...not against such tenacious opposition at least!

A fascinating watch; loved the intensity. The surprising move for me in the opening was White's Na3. Phil didn't hesitate to capitalise in gaining an advantage. David's subsequent doubled-up a pawns gave him a lopsided look; particularly given the queens had already been exchanged. Yes, Na3 dominated the whole flow of the game. My guess is David's probably since pondered why he hadn't moved the other knight to e2 instead. Still, don't feel too bad. I mean, it's not as if it was a complete blunder like the one I played against Roy!

Yes a fantastic game to play. A great way to end the run I was on...loved all the technical pin-stepping at the end. Well done Phil for persevering and finding that illusive path for the knight (I was sick of the sight of 'black beauties' by the end I can tell you!) As usual all my carefully-plotted rock-solid plans that I laid during the match were exposed as wobbly at best when the machines had a look later but that's what I love about it all...and I was sure at least a draw was possible with best play for white at the end but alas not :-( Again cheers for the game Phil and well played

At last and who more fitting to do it than our Match Captain of the Championship Torbay Division 3 team, David's first defeat since joining the club, I hope the family understood the words, " I lost" when they asked how he got on, I will look at the finer points of the game later, in the mean time, enjoy your Easter Egg, David.
