Thanks David for your compliment on my play. Your analysis re: 20...Qc6 being a critical move is, I believe, spot on.

Thanks as well Phil for your comment. You make a very interesting and pertinent point about the potential move 28....Qg5+ which should indeed have resulted in a draw by repetition. I am thinking now that I may have recorded the previous move by Black incorrectly, and it should perhaps have been 27...Qd7 instead of 27....Qe7. If that was the case 28 Qg5+ would not have been possible. I have sent an email to James asking him to have a look at his annotation of the move, or recollection of it, which will hopefully resolve the issue.

Well played, Alan, and a neat checkmate at the end.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but could James not have forced a draw right at the end with 28. ...Qg5+ ? After capturing the rook on c1, he can then get a 3-fold repetition by toggling beween Qg5+ and Qc1+ White can't afford to exchange off queens because he is now a rook down, and he can't force mate with just the bishop and the rook.

Looking briefly at the game I think 20...Qc6 is the move that jumps out at me the most. At this point James has to play b4 to try and block up the Queen side. Even then the lack of play with the rooks down the King side doesn't look too promising for James although play against the e5 pawn and moves like ...h5 may give something back.

Great interplay with the white pieces. Well played Alan, a deserving win.
