Press Report 29th September 2017

Another busy and competitive evening at the South Hams Chess didn’t really spring any major surprises this, but three games stood out from the others. First was in the match between Ken Ashby v Dennis Russell, where in a game that saw Ken Ashby all but lost through a blunder of giving his knight away; Dennis then returned the favour in a big way by giving up his queen. So from the jaws of defeat Ken snatched a victory - a victory that puts him in the top four of the Dunleavy League. The match of the night, however, was in the Dunleavy between John Belli and James Fowler. In a long tense game James just forced a win, no blunders in that one.

In other games in the Dunleavy League saw wins for Barry Sweetman against Oliver Zaffiro, his fourth win in succession; while Alan Davies beat Zak Zaffiro.

In the clubs top division the Homan League saw Steven Levy beat Ben Wilkinson in surprisingly quick time, with Ben miscalculating a combination of moves. Chris Wilcox bounced back to form to beat Roy Greenhalgh, while in the last game to finish, David Archer and Clifford Peach drew their game. David was just unable to break down Clifford’s defence, so Steven Levy remains unbeaten with three wins from three games.
