On Mon 25th South Hams Chess Club travelled to Plymouth for a Rapidplay fixture. It was a tough encounter! David Archer scored a win and a draw against Michael Stinton-Brownbridge on board one. Ben Wilkinson managed a win and a loss against Nick Butland on board two. On boards three and four there was less joy as Phil McConnell lost both games against Martin Quinn and Trevor Hurt shared the same fate vs David Jervis. The final score was 5.5 / 2.5 to Plymouth.
On Tues 26th there was a fixture in the TCL Knockout competition against Brixham. This was a six board affair with the prize being a place in the Semi Finals. It was a closely fought battle...Steve Levy got the better of Chris Collins, Phil McConnell was defeated by Nathan Mills and Roy Greenhalgh was beaten by Mike Cuggy. The next three games were tight draws...James Fowler vs Paul Wiseman, Alan Davies vs Barry Lippard and Arthur Doble vs Chris Cawser. This gave the victory to Brixham with 3.5 vs 2.5. Overall a tough week for South Hams in the Torbay Leagues.
Back at the club on Thursday there was some serious action in the internal leagues. In the Dunleavey League Dennis Cowley got a win against a spirited Arthur Doble to move up into 3rd place and Alan Davies outfoxed Roy Greenhalgh to jump into 5th. Tony Collins had an unfortunate week by losing to both Ken Ashby and Phil McConnell.
In the Cookworthy Cup David Archer managed a win against James Schofield after a long battle to become the 6th player to reach the quarter finals.
In the Homan League, positions 1 and 2 went head to head with Steve Levy coming out on top against Steve Dickinson to maintain his 100% record with 8 out of 8. Barry Sweetman played a solid game to get a great victory against Trevor Hurt and Cliff Peach weathered some inventive play by Richard Thomas before turning the screw to finally get the point. The game and win of the week though has got to go to Ben Wilkinson who threw the kitchen sink at James Fowler who then threw it back again, after a mental middle game Ben came out on top to claim the win.
