Last week saw another raft of twists and turns at South Hams Chess Club.
On Tues 3rd the Div 2 team travelled to Brixham for an away match. On Board 1 David Archer got the night underway with a win against Nathan Mills. On board 2 Steve Dickinson came up against a determined Chris Collins and failed to win. Board 3 saw Phil McConnell play a nice game and take the point off Mike Cuggy. And on Board 4 Roy Greenhalgh somehow managed to avoid a mate in two against Barry Lippard and come away with a draw. The overall result was 2.5 to 1.5 in South Hams favour. Another strong result for the Div 2 team.
Thur 5th saw the Div 1 team travel to the mighty Newton Abbot for their second encounter of the season. It was a fairly even battle and ended in a 2 all draw on the night. Steve Levy beat Alan Brusey, James Schofield drew with John Nyman, Steve Dickinson drew with Joshua Blackmore and Phil McConnell was outplayed by Andrew Kinder.
Thur 5th also saw a home fixture in Div 4 with the visitors being Torquay Boys Grammer School. With the last fixture ending 3.5 to 0.5 in South Hams favour the Torquay Boys put up a much better fight and left with a respectrable 2-2 draw. Roy Greenhalgh beat Oliver Mortimer, Trevor Hurt was outmanouvered by Luke Glasson, Ken Ashby was outfoxed by Aritra Paul and James Fowler was successful against Thomas Barlass.
In the DCCA (SAT) Mamhead League South Hams played a 'Two Boarder' against Plymouth. Steve Levy beat Micheal Stinton-Brownbridge and Cliff Peach managed a draw against Martin Quinn which gave South Hams the points on the day.
There was one internal League game in the Dunleavey League when David Archer played Arthur Doble. After the escape of the century David came away with the point to cling on to his league position.
With the East Devon Chess Congress on at Exeter over the weekend 3 South Hams players took to the tables and joined in. In the Major section Cliff Peach played in a tough field and still managed to score 1 point. In the Minor Section Roy Greenhalgh scored a commendable 3 points and Trevor Hurt a respectable 2 points. All eyes are now firmly fixed back on the internal League games with only 4 Thursday left.
