South Hams Chess Club

Press Report 17th September 2021

The South Hams Chess Club’s online season got off to a steady start with no surprise results, but several excellent performances. Arthur Doble gave Club Champion Steve Levy a real scare, and was looking good for at least a draw. In an end game that wasn’t complicated, he got a little greedy and grabbed a pawn which turned out to be a poisoned pawn, which left Steve with a check mate next move. On this form Arthur could be one to watch, while at the same time Tony Tatam gave Cookworthy cup winner David Archer a great scrap all the way, but eventually lost to David Queening his lonesome pawn.

Other games saw Phil McConnell lose to James Schofield after playing his knight to the wrong square; Alan Davies beat Richard Thomas in a close tactical game; Chris Willcox beat Ken Ashby, while Quentin Thwaites beat an out of form James Fowler.

Although it’s not what members want it’s looking like being a tough online competition, although some games will be played over the board by members who have been double vaccinated, but not everyone is quite ready for that at the moment.
