Match Report

Date:  20 Oct 2016

A disastrous start to the 2016/17 rapidplay season saw South Hams, last seasons champions, brutally dispatched by a strong Newton Abbot side.

The first round of games left the home side in tatters, losing 3.5 -0.5. David Archer was unable to get the better of the experienced campaigner, Andrew Kinder, and on rapidplay debut, Oliver Zaffiro was unable to get the better of his higher graded opponent. Not even Commander in Chief, Steve Levy could see off Paul Brooks, even with a 30+ point grading advantage. The only bright spot was the captains well crafted draw against Jacquie Barber-Lafon. (See game in database!).

The second set of games was only slightly better. Again, David and Oliver were outfoxed by their respective opponents and left battered and bruised. Steve Levy however, riled by his loss in the first game, outplayed Paul in a tense endgame, with only a couple of minutes left on the clock. Ben also managed to claw back another point in his second game, proving that he does not fear the fairer sex!

The final score read like one of my school reports – “could do much better” ….

An excellent result for South Hams, with all but the captain pulling their weight! The first round matches saw Chris notch up his first rapidplay win against Tony Tatam, although possibly not the best plan to outplay the provider of your estimated grade! Roy secured the second point on board three, with a good result against John Dean, who was standing in for the absent Megan O'Brien. The ever reliable Steve Levy added the third point against the under-graded Mick Stinton-Brownbridge. The final game gave Plymouth their first point, with Ben blundering a pawn on move six, and never really being allowed back into the game.

The second half of the evening saw more of the same, with Steve proving too strong for Mick Stinton, and Chris once again getting the better of Tony Tatam. Roy, unfortunately, was not able to take a second point from John Dean, but Ben was consistent and served up a second helping of rubbish against a very solid Nick Hodge.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening, and an excellent score line.

Plymouth exacted their revenge on a Strong South Hams team, with the home teams top boards unable to replicate the Dunleavy players contribution.

In the first round of games, Cliff rapidly took his game into a better endgame, and chalked up South Hams first point. Chris was unable to find a way through a complicated middle game, and Rob Wilby was able to level the score.

David playing his usual attacking chess forced himself into a winning position, only to make an illegal move and was forced to concede the game.

On top board Steve was forced to concede a half point to Mick Stiinton, leaving Plymouth 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 up at the tea break.

The second round of games was more of the same, with close games, but not the results South Hams needed. the result of the night has to go to Chris, who beat Rob Wilby - no mean feat!

The two results that matter, Plymouth 4½ - 3½ South Hams, and Homan 1 - 2½ Dunleavy!

The South Hams Rapidplay team recovered from a 2½ - 1½ deficit at half time to win the second half 0 - 4, thus winning the match by 2½ - 5½.

On Board 1, as white Steve produced a draw in a tight game, but as black he converted a superiority of material into a won end game.

On Board 2, David had two cracking, complicated games against a talented young opponent, and played brilliantly to "out-tactic" him in both games.

On Board 3, as white Phil moved far too quickly at first, and blundered his queen on move 7. There was no recovery after that. But he recoved as black, winning with a nice attack on his opponent's uncastled king.

It was a similar story on Board 4, with Tony losing very quickly as black due to playing the opening far too fast. However he redeemed himself as white, winning convincingly.

So, revenge for the 2½ - 5½ defeat which Newton Abbot inflicted on us at home earlier in the season.

Thank you to Newton Abbot for an enjoyable evening.
